Shell's petrochemicals activities in the Middle East
Shell has a solid historical presence in the Middle East with an extensive portfolio of chemicals manufacturing, storage, logistics and trading operations based in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Jordan and Egypt. A Gas to Liquids complex is being built in Qatar. Shell’s Middle East organisation includes operations in Pakistan.
Saudi Arabia
Shell is a 50:50 joint venture partner in the Saudi Arabia Petrochemical Company (Sadaf), producing a total of over 4.7 million tonnes of petrochemicals annually including: ethylene, ethylene dichloride, caustic soda, styrene monomer and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE)
Sadaf has close links with another Shell joint venture, the Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery Company (Sasref). Operating one of the region’s largest refineries, Sasref produces two key products: naphtha and benzene.
Dubai
Shell has three teams in Dubai providing operations, marketing and sales, logistics and customer service support for its Middle East chemicals activities. Products marketed here include a range of solvents, polyols for polyurethane production and monopropylene glycol.
Products supplied in the region are stored in Shell’s chemicals terminal in Dubai, which includes a drumming facility to meet customers’ packaging requirements.
Jordan
Shell uses third-party bulk storage and blending facilities in Aqaba, Jordan for polyurethane products sold in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq.
Egypt
A bulk chemicals facility located in Suez, Egypt, supplies Shell products to the local Egyptian market.
Qatar
In Qatar, where Shell and Qatar Petroleum are developing the world’s largest Gas to Liquids (GTL) plant, there are plans for a world-scale ethane-based cracker and derivatives complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City.
Pakistan
A bulk chemicals facility located in Kaemari Karachi supplies Shell products to the local market.
