Man-Nhi - Graduate Profile

Shell offered me my current role as a great place to start my graduate career. I took the offer, and I haven't regretted my choice at all. Working in a refinery is far more interesting than I first expected, and I can now do both design work and be close to the operation.

Man-Nhi

University attended: Chalmers University of Technology
Course taken: Chemical Engineer, MSc
Graduated:2006

How did Shell capture your interest? And why did you choose Shell?

Following my graduation, I wanted to try something different, but I also wanted to develop deep technical knowledge in my work. As an international company, Shell offers not only an international workplace but also a wide range of different job positions, in both technical and non-technical roles.

What is your current job?

I work as project technologist in a refinery, developing projects to improve long-term operations, and dealing with any operational issues that the refinery process units may have.

What does a typical day look like?

My day to day can be very different, depending on which project I'm working on that week.

My main work involves design proposals for safe changes in the refinery. During the development of the designs, I monitor the process conditions, make models of the process, initiate plant inspections, and design the equipment and instrumentation after standards.

In general, I work closely with my colleagues in operations and the engineering department to find the best solutions.

What are the interesting aspects of your job?

I like the variety and freedom in my job. The work helps me to develop continuously, both personally and professionally. Another big plus is that I get to work with great, highly skilled and competent people.

Does your job match what you had in mind? Better, different? Please, describe.

After I finished the Shell Recruitment Day, my current role was proposed as a great place to start my Shell career. I took the offer, and haven't regretted my choice at all. Working in a refinery is far more interesting than I first expected, and I can now do both design work and be close to the operation.

How do see your next role and future career opportunities at Shell?

I see the potential for many opportunities in future, possibly at another refinery in another location. There is such global scope with Shell, anything's possible.

Is there something you didn’t expect from Shell but which exceeded your expectations?

I have got so much support from my managers, and real encouragement to develop.

To improve my technical knowledge, I've had the opportunity to go to different work-related courses in The Netherlands. Shell offers continuous development throughout a working career, which I find very important.

What are your reasons for staying with Shell?

The potential to develop and generate interesting work, surrounded by competent and friendly colleagues.
