What is your current role at Shell? |
 |
Basically, we take care of SQL server databases, making sure that each of the three different versions are backed up and available 24/7. We also handle upgrades, data and table issues, system recovery and data protection.
Database administration is important because SQL databases hold the data for applications run by Shell employees, as well as for internet or intranet sites.
There are 12 people on our team – two to each database. This job really keeps you busy, so we have to coordinate effectively to get everything done.

What do you like best about your role? |
 |
It’s never boring. There is always something new to find out or read about – keeping current in our field is a never-ending process. On a given day, I respond to countless emails, resolve several data problems, restore systems, and meet with internal customers to help them feel comfortable using the tools provided through the database.
We also have an informal group of Shell database administrators (DBAs) here in Houston. These DBAs work in a variety of the Shell businesses, and we stay in contact through email and phone calls as well as more informal get-togethers. We talk about new developments, ways to resolve specific issues and provide general support for the group. This network is really helpful.

| I studied Electrical Engineering Technology at the University of Houston, and have worked in IT since 1988. I started with mainframes and have worked at the helpdesk as well as in network and PC support. Just before coming to Shell, I worked for a financial institution as a DBA.

I grew up in the Houston area and the Shell logo has been familiar to me since I was a kid. Shell has always been a strong presence here, even as other companies have come and gone.
Shell is committed to its people. They are instrumental in the development of new skills and there are many opportunities to move into different areas of the company.
