What is your current role at Shell? |
I work as a Production Technologist on the IMO River Oil field in Nigeria, West Africa. My main responsibility is to maximise the oil production from 66 wells, which currently produce 44,000 barrels oil per day. This involves technically analysing well performance as well as visiting field operations to help solve problems on the wells. I also oversee the implementation of my recommendations – for example, concerning projects to produce more oil and less water. I work with a sub-surface team made up of geologists, petrophysicists and reservoir engineers whose major focus is making the most value of the assets we have.

What do you like best about your role? |
| I enjoy having ownership of the field’s production where I can see my ideas and actions in practice. Also, I like the changing nature of the job – I can be working on a cost saving proposal one moment and looking for opportunities to drill new wells the next, because of the ever-changing business climate.

Tell us about your background and experience |
I graduated with an Msc in Chemical Engineering from Gent University in Belgium and immediately afterwards did an MBA. I then joined another international company in their downstream business where I worked for six years. I was a process engineer for three years, optimising the production process. Then, I spent two years in business planning and marketing and another year in sales before joining Shell. On joining, I went to work offshore on a drilling-rig in the North Sea for one year. As such I got to know the Exploration and Production business hands-on, preparing me to move into my current role.

What makes you stay at Shell? |
Shell has enabled my husband and I to build international careers. He also works as a Production Technologist but on a different team. In addition, I really like the magnitude of the Oil business. To work with world-class professionals, on major assets all over the globe provides enormous learning opportunities – I experience new things everyday, and that helps me develop both personally and professionally.
