What is your current role at Shell? |
Within my current job I essentially have three roles. The first involves my responsibilities as Vice President Human Resources, leading a global team of HR professionals across many regions. I support, stimulate and align my team around traditional HR activities (resourcing, talent management, ER/IR & HR policy) plus organisational change and learning and development. In the past 18 months, globalisation has caused changes to the structure of the HR function and has led to many new staff joining us, creating a renewed and enthusiastic global HR team. As an HR team, our goal is to have a population of world-class, well-motivated technical experts – this is key to SGSI’s business as we trade on the expertise of our staff. My second role is as leader of the Global Manufacturing, Supply and Distribution (MSD) HR network, working on setting up globally integrated skill pool management for all of the MSD and SGSI disciplines. This involves working together with the HR managers for MSD in the various zones on Talent reviews, Competence management and many other initiatives. It also involves me being a member of the MSD Council. Lastly, I’m a member of the Management Team (MT) of Shell Global Solutions in which I contribute to the various MT decisions that are made on the direction and performance of Shell Global Solutions.

What do you like best about your role? |
| I like being an HR person in a technical environment, as I feel I can understand and work with people with a technical background. I am at my best here, and can add real value to the business. I also enjoy working in a global company and the challenge that comes with it.

Tell us about your background and experience |
| I graduated in 1989 in Sociology and Business Administration, and then joined Shell. I have always worked in HR – starting with my first two jobs in Shell’s Exploration and Production operating unit in The Netherlands. I then went to Shell Marketing in Oman, working in the downstream sector as the HR and Admin Manager for four years before returning to The Netherlands again as the Employee Relations and Industrial Relations Manager. Next I was the General Manager HR in Shell Energy, part of Shell’s Gas & Power business in Europe, before taking on my current role.

What makes you stay at Shell? |
In my view, Shell is one of, if not the best company to work for. There are great career opportunities, an excellent remuneration and benefits package, an organisational culture that is aimed at trying to get the best out of everyone and a culture that treats people with respect. On top of that, Shell’s HR processes systems and tools are very often leading edge, providing a very rewarding environment to work in. I thoroughly enjoy working for Shell and feel I am still learning and developing myself on a daily basis.
