What is your current role at Shell?

I am the Hot Side Startup Engineer for the Debottleneck Project. Here I’m in charge of commissioning the Hot Side of the plant, as well as a number of operability projects. After the plant has been built, my job is to the get the unit ready to start-up. Generally, start-up teams consist of people from various organisations at a particular plant site – in this case, Deer Park.

What do you like best about your role?

This job is great because it offers a lot of leadership opportunities and responsibility for large blocks of work. I have the knowledge and authority to get things done, as well as the chance to be very productive and start up a plant. Working within an integrated team to achieve the goals around commissioning and operability projects is an interesting and challenging opportunity.

Tell us about your background and experience

I’m originally form Springfield, Missouri and have a degree in Mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla. While in school, I worked a couple of co-ops, where I gained general plant engineering experience and became comfortable with industry.

What makes you stay at Shell?

Over the last six years, Shell has continued to bring forth new and challenging opportunities. I have had four different roles here and coupled with the amount of responsibility I have been able to take on, I’m interested to see what’s next.

Overall, a strong team with a clear vision, goals, support and great people really makes it interesting and fun to work at Shell. Plus when you really like what you’re doing, it’s easy to get on track. Shell makes it easy to take advantage of regional and international opportunities. And, of course, it’s easy to take care of family, thanks to the array of benefits and their attitude to the work/life balance. That’s really important to me right now.
