HR Director, Shell Companies in North East Asia

  • Location: China
  • Joined Shell: 1982

Tell us about your background and experience

I wanted to join a company large enough to offer a wide range of work opportunities across a broad geography, and with values consistent with my own. I joined Shell because I believed they could offer this and more.

During my time here, I have had the opportunity to work in virtually all of Shell’s major businesses and service organisations. This has included IT services, Exploration and Production, Oil Products – Retail Marketing, Oil Products – Refining, Chemicals – Manufacturing, Chemicals – Global Learning and Development, and my current multi-business role in China.

The types of roles have included assignments as a Human Resources generalist, Labour Relations Supervisor, Acquisition Transition Manager, Chemicals Plant HR Manager, Global Chemicals Learning and Development Manager, and HR Director for Shell Companies in North East Asia. My roles have involved me in the full range of HR activities, including compensation, reward and recognition, labour negotiations, organisational development, acquisitions and divestments, diversity and inclusiveness, talent attraction and development, and change management.

My career with Shell has enabled me to work in Texas, California, and West Virginia in the US, as well as Syria, the UK, Mexico City and China.

Shell has clearly provided the kinds of opportunities I was looking for when I joined the Company and I look forward to continuing this journey in the years ahead.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

My current role is HR Director for Shell Companies in North East Asia. Based in Beijing, China, I am responsible for leading the development and delivery of HR strategies to meet Shell China’s ambitious business objectives. I am also involved in implementing global Shell Group People Strategy in China, creating a work environment that leverages the diverse talent of our local workforce and aggressively developing HR staff to create an environment for continued excellence and growth.

What do you like most about the job?

There are many things I like about the job. All Shell’s major businesses are working to establish a strong presence in China. I have the opportunity to work directly with all of these businesses to ensure they have the HR leadership, systems, programs, and support required to meet their business objectives.

I also enjoy being part of a global HR community where I can both contribute to the community as a whole and feel confident in the expertise and knowledge available in that community.

Finally, I enjoy the dynamic Chinese market, being part of the historic changes taking place in this country, and the friendships I am forming with my Chinese colleagues.
