What is your current role at Shell?

I am an HR manager for SPS (Shell People Services), which involves supporting over 300 SPS employees in the US, as well as three global client groups. We help drive the global HR processes including pay, stock options, talent review, performance management, promotions, employee relation issues and hiring. It’s HR for HR – providing HR advice to the HR community.

What do you like best about your role?

It’s very fast paced, and I am constantly challenged to exceed expectations. I wouldn’t be happy otherwise. There is also a lot of interface with employees and top management. I find myself multi-tasking with both global and local responsibilities, determining priorities, deciding employee issues… balancing so many things. For the first nine months of my job, I was doing this, as well as leading the SPS HR Functional Excellence global project responsible for developing an online HR competency assessment system.

Tell us about your background and experience

My background is varied. I have worked in auditing, compensation, staffing, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory litigation and as an HR generalist – I have enjoyed a lot of different challenges and experiences. I got out of HR for a while and came back about six years ago because I really felt that my passion and expertise is in this field. Once you find what you like to do, it’s really easy to focus all your energy and commit yourself to strive for excellence.

What makes you stay at Shell?

Shell has the resources – people, finances, professionalism and leadership commitment to pursue excellence in HR and our businesses. It is really evident that HR is a valued and respected partner at Shell. For me, that is the key driver. For example, within areas like employee learning and development or cultural awareness, there is an unwavering commitment to our employees.

We devote a huge number of resources to accomplish our goals, and we’re willing to really try new things. A lot of companies just can’t or won’t do that.
