Why did you decide to work for Shell?

I wanted to join a global Company that would enable me to work in an international environment. At the same time I was looking for the ability to experience different parts of a business and a broad range of roles throughout my career. Shell offered me all of the above (via the company's internal job posting 'Open-Resourcing', enabling employees to consider job opportunities worldwide and across all areas of the business).

How would you describe your role at Shell?

I am part of an exciting and international team of highly skilled and motivated professionals who have their finger on the pulse of globally traded markets.

How would you describe your typical day?

My day generally starts with catching up on news, market prices and publications, before attending the crude oil team's daily global market review. This provides an overview of the trading network's positions, market views and trading strategies. I spend considerable time interfacing with traders from other companies. I’ll gather market information, keep abreast of and conduct trades. I regularly have meetings with clients to discuss the crude oil markets, business opportunities and market views. And I’ll sometimes travel to meet international customers, too.

Throughout the day I analyse market data, e.g. moves in outright prices, geopolitical developments, economic data, and their impact on my trading strategy.

Trading is primarily about maximising the team's profitability by taking considered risks in the physical, freight and derivative markets. It’s important that we respond rapidly to any changes in the dynamics of these markets.

What do you like most about the job?

I enjoy the speed and agility involved in remaining in touch with fast-moving markets and the impact that new information has on trading behaviour. The trading environment is a ‘meritocracy’ where new entrants can get involved, obtain responsibility very early in their career and make an important and direct contribution to the team's profit and loss. Every day is a new and exciting challenge, with markets in a constant state of flux.
