Why did you join Shell?

Towards the end of my Business Studies degree, I was evaluating several job offers. All of the companies I was considering (including Shell) were very international, leaders in their respective industries and enjoyed an excellent reputation. These factors were important to me and helped me narrow down my search to a few employers. The decisive factors in the end, however, were the right mix of job, location and people. The job I was offered was very exciting, London as a city is a great place to live, and most important of all, the people I met were extremely motivated and enthusiastic.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

Traders here at Shell International Trading And Shipping Company (STASCo) are responsible for trading crude oil between oil field owners (typically governments and oil majors) and refineries, as well as oil products between refineries and the marketplace. Besides trading the actual commodities, STASCo also trades derivatives in order to hedge its risk exposure.

How would you describe your typical day?

My day usually starts with a team meeting to update everyone on the activities of the last few hours. As STASCo and its subsidiaries in Houston, Dubai and Singapore work around the clock, the latest news is passed on from one office to the next, e.g. political instabilities, financial market updates, refinery accidents, ship collisions, implications of new laws, etc. As the day progresses, traders either receive offers from counterparties, which they then evaluate and possibly accept, or they discover a market opportunity and offer to buy or sell commodities from/to counterparties themselves.

What do you like most about the job?

Working in Shell Trading enables me to work at the interface of the oil and banking industries. Moreover, everyone here receives the opportunity of working in a cross-functional environment. As a part of training, most employees here work in our claims department, our contracts department, in operations and in trading. The projects I am currently working on require me to travel to our offices in Rotterdam, and other projects in our Singapore and Dubai offices might be just around the corner for me.

What other career options did you consider?

Management Consulting, Banking, Hi-Tech/IT
