“I discovered what it means to be part of a fully diversified team. In school, everyone I ever worked with was an engineer. At Gourami, everyone was unique and from a different major, college and heritage, and with a different general outlook on work life. This was the greatest benefit of Gourami as it truly gave me a taste of what life at Shell would be like.”

Why did you choose to participate in Gourami? |
After a recent interview, Shell called and invited me to the Challenge. I was very keen to participate, as I wanted to learn more about Shell and its employees.

How would you describe your experience during Gourami? |
| My experience was unique. I have never done anything even remotely similar to Gourami before. The days were long but there was still never enough time to get everything done! The decisions therefore had to be much quicker than on other projects I’ve worked on and teamwork was essential. For me the greatest thing about Gourami was that it combined people from all the different disciplines that Shell recruits from, including engineering, business and HR, from colleges across the US. This created very diverse multifunctional teams in which members learned both from the project and each other

What were some of the challenges you faced? |
The time constraint was the biggest challenge. My team was extremely hard working and paid great attention to detail. We only had five days to do a project that would normally take months. This meant making huge assumptions about everything.

What did you get out of your experience of Gourami? |
I discovered what it means to be part of a fully diversified team. In school everyone I ever worked with was an engineer. At Gourami, everyone was unique and from a different major, college and heritage and with a different general outlook on work life. This was the greatest benefit of Gourami as it truly gave me a taste of what life at Shell would be like. Don’t worry though, life at Shell goes at a much more careful pace than Gourami.
