Car Wash / Car Care

printable version

What kind of soap should I use to wash my car?

You should use only pH neutral soap that's specifically formulated for washing cars. There are many available. And don't use household soaps or detergents: many of them are too strong, and can dull the finish.

It's also best, by the way, to wash your car in the shade. That way it won't dry on its own before you're finished, and end up with streaks.

Is there any way I can remove a bumper sticker from my car?

Try soaking it with hot water (be careful not to burn yourself!) Then use a plastic pot scrubber on it. It may take several applications of hot water and scrubbing to remove it all. If small pieces of glue remain, use paint thinner (not turpentine, and NEVER gasoline) to remove them.

What is the best way to get tar off the bumper and fenders of my car? Is it true that cola pop will take tar off?

No cola please! When your car has little spots of hard-to-remove stains such as tar or dead bugs, the best bets are commercial products available to remove them safely. These products usually have a solvent or mineral spirit base which enhances their degreasing/cleaning properties.

After applying the cleaner, remove it thoroughly and wash the spot immediately with soap and water. Always follow instructions on the bottle, since some cleaners can damage your skin or your vehicle's paint if left on too long or applied improperly.

And never, ever, use gasoline as a cleaner!
