Waterton Gas Release Update

19/11/2007

Calgary, Alberta – Residents are free to return to their homes following a sour gas release this morning from a pipeline operated by Shell Canada in the Waterton gas field, about 20 kilometres west of Pincher Creek.

Shell is not aware of any reports of injuries or health complaints.

“Shell regrets this incident and will investigate it to ensure we understand the causes,” said Bill Kinoshita, Operations Manager at Shell’s Waterton Complex.

“As a precaution, we have decided to voluntarily shut in production operations in the area until the cause of the incident is known. Shell’s priority is always the safety of residents, its employees and contractors.”

At about 9:15 a.m., Shell was alerted to a problem with the pipeline by system alarms at its Waterton complex control centre. The affected section of the pipeline was successfully isolated and the release was brought under control. As a safety precaution, Shell evacuated five people in the vicinity of the well.

“Our monitoring system allowed us to act quickly and notify residents in the area. Our emergency response system worked as designed,” Kinoshita said.

Shell continues to work with the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board and other appropriate authorities.
