Shell Canada’s gasoline achieves TOP TIER designation

02 May 2006

Calgary, Alberta – Shell Canada (Shell) is pleased to announce it is the first Canada-wide fuel producer and marketer to meet “TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline” standards established by four of the world’s top automakers: GM, BMW, Honda and Toyota.

“These four auto manufacturers understand how quality gasoline affects vehicle performance and have collectively raised the bar for fuels in Canada with TOP TIER,” said Eymbert Vaandering, Vice-President, Retail, Shell Canada Products. “We’re constantly in pursuit of the cleanest, most efficient fuels possible and our newly acquired TOP TIER designation is proof positive that we’re on the right track,” said Vaandering.

Achieving TOP TIER status means detergency levels in each grade of Shell Canada’s gasoline (Bronze, Silver and premium V-Power™) are higher than what is set by the Canadian General Standards Board. “TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline” helps keep engines cleaner than using gasolines with lower levels of deposit control additives. Clean engines help provide optimal fuel economy and performance.

A team from Shell Canada and its international affiliates tested and developed Shell gasolines in Canada to ensure they met “TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline” standards. Test results exceeded TOP TIER requirements, enabling the company to receive its designation.

"On behalf of the GM Canada team, we congratulate Shell Canada on being the first national fuel company to attain the TOP TIER fuel standard," said Michael A. Grimaldi, President, General Motors of Canada Limited.

Shell Canada’s TOP TIER gasolines are available only at Shell-branded gas stations. More information about this TOP TIER designation can be found at www.shell.ca/toptier.
