“We felt the best way to celebrate Alberta’s last 100 years was to salute the young people who will help shape the next 100 years,” says Shell Canada President and CEO Clive Mather. “Through Shell’s Spirit of the Future Awards, we hope to encourage Alberta’s young volunteers to continue their education and, at the same time, recognize their commitment to their communities.” Each Spirit of the Future Award winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship from Shell towards their post-secondary education and Shell will also contribute $5,000 to the not-for-profit organization with which each winner volunteers. Winners will also appear in their own television vignette that will broadcast across Alberta on Global Television's network in the fall of 2005. Shell Canada teamed up with Global Television to present the Awards. “These exceptional young men and women not only represent all corners of Alberta and everywhere in between, they also represent the future of our province,” says Premier Ralph Klein. “Each has an individual story, a personal reason for volunteering and a strong idea of how they want to contribute to Alberta’s success as the province moves into its next 100 years.” The 30 winners, each exemplifying the province’s volunteer spirit, were selected by a committee of representatives from Alberta’s business, government and not-for-profit sectors.
