Fifteen years of empowering Canadians to make a difference!

05 Aug 2005

Calgary, Alberta – This summer the Shell Environmental Fund (SEF) marked fifteen years of providing grants to people who want to improve or protect the Canadian environment.

“It is really inspiring to see what people can do, combining their initiative and knowledge with a grant from Shell,” said Linda Sharp, advisor, public affairs, Shell Canada Limited. “The types of projects have changed over the years and environmental priorities differ from region to region, but the enthusiasm and dedication of community volunteers hasn't changed since the first grant.”

Launched in 1990, the Shell Environmental Fund has granted over $11 million to almost 4000 environmental projects across the country. Individuals, schools, community associations, service clubs and environmental groups apply for project funding of up to $5000. Projects can include habitat restoration, beach clean-ups, waste reduction and recycling programs, trail restoration, educational initiatives, and other innovative environmental projects. Five regional panels across Canada review applications and decide the grants.

“As one of the original panel members reviewing the SEF projects, I was always encouraged by the many worthwhile and important environmental projects that were being proposed,” states Senior Policy Advisor for the Ontario Ministry of Economics and former SEF panel member George Cadete. “Without the SEF these projects may never have gone forward or may have been severely reduced in their scope. I am extremely pleased to see that Shell Canada has continued to show great environmental stewardship by providing assistance to those organizations that are active in making a difference in our environment and our communities.”

After 15 years, the Shell Environmental Fund remains a popular program, having received a record number of applications for the spring panel review. The next deadline for applications is October 1, 2005.
