Shell’s Calgary Research Centre hosts new green projects

October 15, 2007

Shell Canada’s Calgary Research Centre (CRC) is part of Shell’s Global Solutions, providing world-class technology, innovation and research to Shell’s business units.  The premiere research and technical facility is now also hosting some of the company’s newest “green” initiatives, like “xeriscaping”.

Though the term “xeriscaping” might be Greek to most Canadians, it’s becoming increasingly familiar among Shell people in Calgary. Xeriscaping – a combination word from the ancient Greek xeros (dry) and landscaping – is a method of growing plants in a dry climate without supplemental irrigation or watering.

Land at Shell’s CRC will be used in a project where some of the mown grass and planted flowers will be replaced with native vegetation that is suited to the region’s naturally dry climate.

In this project, Xeriscaping would reduce the amount of maintenance required, save on water, eliminate fertilizers and pesticides – and look more natural for this region. (Calgary is on the western edge of semi-arid prairie that turns to foothills as you move toward the Rockies.)

It’s one of several “green” initiatives at the CRC that is part of Shell’s commitment to sustainable development.

Also planned for CRC is a "green roof" project where flat rooftop surfaces are populated with native flora, yielding a number of well-established environmental advantages. And other green initiatives are in the early stages such as a pilot composting program, geothermal system (cooling or warming water underground), solar power and modifications to building electrical and mechanical systems, to make more efficient use of energy and water.

“As an environmentally responsible company we need to show our true colors by serving as a role model to others to show what can be accomplished with these proven techniques and Shell’s leadership,” says Shell’s Jano Lehocky of Facilities and Services.

Lehocky and the Facilities & Services team are collaborating with landscape architects from IBI Group for the green roof and xeriscaping projects. Some of the work involves volunteer time from Shell employees and others, but they believe it’s worth the effort.

CRC scientists and technologists help solve Shell’s technical questions every day, but these projects allow them apply a diverse skill set to help find innovative ways to meet the challenges of sustainable development.

For more information about the CRC, there will be an open house evening on Thursday, October 18 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. for tours, refreshments and information sessions. The CRC is located at 3655 36 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta.
