It is one of the largest in Canada. 1958 First company to introduce tunnel carwashes. In 1958 Shell developed a chain of tunnel carwashes and is still the biggest operator of carwashes in Canada today. 1968 First major oil company to open self-serve gas stations. In 1968, Shell opened its first self-serve station at the corner of 21st and Main in Vancouver, marking the beginning of a major change in emphasis in Canadian service stations. 1968 First anti-static additive for jet fuels. In 1968, Shell introduced the first anti-static additive for jet fuels, thus protecting jets from explosions caused by static electricity generated during high-speed fueling, and starting a new procedure that is now standard aviation practice. 1970 First Canadian oil company to sell unleaded gasoline. With the introduction of Shell Ultra unleaded in 1970, Shell Canada lead the way in meeting the need for an environmentally cleaner fuel. 1972 First major oil company to have convenience food stores. In 1972, Shell offered its customers the chance to pick up groceries while they filled up their cars when it opened food stores at service stations in Moncton and Calgary. Today, Shell Canada operates its own chain of Select Food Stores. 1973 In 1973, Shell "SCOT" process was installed at Waterton gas plant at a cost of approximately $21 million to reduce sulphur-dioxide emissions. 1982 First Ontario location, in Toronto, for the retailing of compressed natural gas as an automotive fuel was opened in 1982. 1984 First refinery in the world to rely solely on synthetic crude oil as a feedstock. When the $1.4 billion state-of-the-art Scotford Refinery opened near Edmonton in 1984, it began using synthetic crude oil, extracted from the massive Alberta Oil Sands for its feedstock. 1986 First (and only) company to add a special combustion-smoothing spark enhancer to gasolines. In 1986, Shell introduced the world's first gasoline spark enhancer ingredient to its high-tech Formula Shell gasolines. 1987 First Canadian oil company to introduce a full service toll-free telephone customer service line. In 1987 Shell introduced the Shell Helps Centre, at 1-800-661-1600. The Centre continues to handle customer calls, and its approach has been copied by a number of Shell Group operating companies in other countries. 1989 First Canadian oil company to completely stop selling leaded gasoline. In October, 1989, Shell Canada announced it would "get the lead out" of all of its service stations. 1998 First gasoline retailer in Canada to introduce a radio chip embedded convenience tag. EasyPAY fits on a key ring and allows customers to automatically charge their credit card and collect AIR MILES® reward miles. 2001 First major integrated oil and gas company in Canada to achieve ISO 14001 registration for all our refineries and gas plants. 2004 First oil sands company to achieve ISO 14001 registration for its oil sands operations with the Athabasca Oil Sands Project.
2005 Shell Canada Products and Flying J Canada Inc. officially opened the first Flying J Travel Plaza site in Canada offering Shell branded gasoline in Edmonton, Alberta.
