Oil Sands

Oil Sands

Shell has operations in each of Alberta’s three main oil sands deposits. Shell’s Athabasca Oil Sands Project mines bitumen in northern Alberta using trucks. Shell’s in situ operations near Peace River and Cold Lake use wells to extract bitumen, which is too deep to be surface mined.  Shell is in the appraisal and testing phase of a potential in situ oil sands project in the far west side of the Athabasca oil sands region.
