Orphan Basin

printable version

Shell Canada has a 20 per cent interest in eight exploration licenses in the Orphan Basin. The Orphan Basin is located about 350 kilometres offshore northeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Orphan Basin is a new, unexplored deepwater basin.

The interest in the lands was acquired under a farm-in agreement with ExxonMobil and Imperial Resources in 2005.

The first well, the outside-operated Great Barasway F-66, was spudded in August 2006 and concluded drilling operations in April 2007. The well was drilled in deep water at a depth of approximately 2,400 metres (7,900 feet).

The well is designated a tight well in accordance with Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board regulations. Results from the well will assist in the planning of future drilling and seismic activities.

The remaining interests in the Orphan Basin are held by Chevron Canada Resources (50 per cent), ExxonMobil Canada (15 per cent), and Imperial Oil Resources (15 per cent).

The last time Shell Canada participated in drilling a well offshore Newfoundland was 1990.
