Klappan Coalbed Methane Exploration Program

Shell Canada Limited has petroleum and natural gas tenure to explore for coalbed methane (CBM) in northwest British Columbia. The Government of British Columbia awarded the tenure in 2004, giving us rights and responsibilities for the minerals, specifically coalbed methane, in the Klappan area. Coalbed methane is also referred to as natural gas from coal (NGC) and coalbed gas (CBG).

Our Klappan project is located within the traditional territory of the Tahltan First Nation. The communities nearest to Shell’s tenured land are Iskut, Telegraph Creek and Dease Lake. We have consulted extensively with the leadership of the Tahltan First Nation as well as the community regarding all our activities, and will continue to do so in future planning in the Klappan.

We are at the early stages of exploration. We drilled three exploration wells in 2004 on previously disturbed lands and used existing roads and a railway bed for access. Although three exploration wells were drilled in 2004 and natural gas was detected, more work is needed to determine whether gas can be produced in an environmentally responsible and commercially viable manner.

We are committed to exploring for and producing natural gas from coal in a socially and environmentally responsible way. This includes discussing next steps with local communities and regulators if the exploration program is successful, protecting water sources both above and below the ground, and using existing access roads and areas previously disturbed by commercial activities in the past where possible for our proposed exploration activities.
