Exploration and Production

The Exploration and Production (E&P) business unit explores for and produces natural gas and natural gas liquids, and is Canada’s largest sulphur producer. E&P also includes Shell’s Unconventional Oil business - in situ oil sands operations that use wells to extract bitumen too deep to be surface mined. E&P operates four sour natural gas processing facilities in the Foothills area of Alberta and four bitumen production facilities in Northern Alberta. It also operates a number of sour gas wells in northeast BC. It includes a 31.3 per cent share of the Sable Offshore Energy Project offshore Nova Scotia, partnership in the proposed Mackenzie Gas Project in northern Canada and an exploration interest in the Orphan Basin offshore Newfoundland.

Burnt Timber Gas Complex

The Burnt Timber Complex processes about 3.6 million cubic metres of raw gas daily.

Jumping Pound Gas Complex

The Jumping Pound Complex west of Calgary supplies many Calgary and area homes with natural gas heating.

Waterton Gas Complex

The Waterton Complex was built in 1963 to process sour natural gas from the Waterton field that Shell discovered in 1957.

Sable Offshore Energy Project

Shell Canada Limited has a 31.3 per cent interest in the offshore assets of the Sable Offshore Energy Project.

Mackenzie Delta

A proposed 1200-km pipeline to transport onshore natural gas reserves from the Mackenzie Delta.

Peace River (Unconventional Oil)

Shell produces bitumen through both thermal and primary (cold) production methods in the Peace River oil sands.

Grosmont (Unconventional Oil)

Shell is in the appraisal and testing phase of a potential in situ oil sands project about 140 kilometres west of Fort McMurray.

Orion (Unconventional Oil)

The Orion project is a thermal in situ production operation located approximately 30 kilometres northwest of Cold Lake in northern Alberta.
