Shell Spramul

Shell Spramul: bitumen emulsions for asphalt applications

Certain applications in road construction or maintenance activity involve uniform spraying of binder as a thin film or construction of thin sealing layers. Compared to conventional bitumen, the spraying of binder or laying of thin layers can be done more effectively so providing better performance to the road surface using Shell Spramul.

Its lower viscosity, better anti-stripping properties, ability to cover a wider area and faster application makes Shell Spramul highly effective for a number of applications. Also, Shell Spramul’s cold application requires less energy, resulting in reduced emissions and a lower product impact on the environment.

Shell Spramul applications:

  • Prime Coat: Shell Spramul SS-1 and SS-1h as per ASTM D 2397 is highly recommended for the priming of a low to medium porosity base course (WMM/WBM). It is specially formulated to penetrate and plug the capillary voids in the surface, coat and bond lose mineral particles, toughen the base course surface and make the surface of the base course water resistant. Its recommended rate of application is 6 to 12kg per 10sqm depending on porosity of the surface.
  • Tack Coat: Shell Spramul RS-1 as per ASTM D 2397 is best suited for a uniform and strong tack coat. Shell Spramul RS-1 is a very low viscosity product which helps facilitate a uniform spray and optimum coverage. Its recommended rate of application is 2 to 3.5kg per 10sqm depending on condition of the surface.
  • Fog Seal/Crack Seal: Shell Spramul SS-1 and SS-1h as per IS: 8887 and as per ASTM D 2397 is recommended as an application to seal the surface to inhibit ravelling and to fill and seal small cracks in existing pavements. Fog seal helps to rejuvenate old oxidized surfaces, thus extending their lives. The recommended rate of application is 3 to 10kg per 10sqm as per surface conditions.
  • Slurry Seal: Shell Spramul SS-1 as per ASTM D 2397 is recommended for slurry seal applications that consist of a mixture of Shell Spramul SS-1, properly graded mineral aggregates, cement, additives and water, proportioned, mixed and uniformly spread over a properly prepared surface. Shell Spramul SS-1 may need to be specifically designed as per gradation and quality of aggregates.
  • Microsurfacing: Shell Spramul Microsurfacing is recommended for microsurfacing application. Microsurfacing is used for preventive and periodic renewal treatment of medium traffic roads. It is used as a surface sealing treatment to improve skid resistance, surface durability and to seal fine and medium cracks. It is applied on existing pavement which is structurally sound, but the surface shows signs of premature ageing, aggregate loss, cracking, polishing, etc. Special grades of Shell Spramul Microsurfacing have been developed for maintenance of bridgedecks.

Advantages for you

Shell Spramul has been developed for cold application of binder in any spray or for mixing with fine to coarse graded aggregates, making it highly effective for the above road applications.

Benefits:

  • Shell Spramul is liquid at ambient temperature and can be used without further heating
  • Due to its low viscosity and delayed breaking, Shell Spramul is formulated to penetrate more deeply than conventional emulsions when used for Prime Coat application
  • Only a small quantity of Shell Spramul for Tack Coat is required
  • Shell Spramul is designed to bond very well with most aggregates
  • Application of Shell Spramul is much faster and requires less manpower than conventional bitumen
  • Cold mixes prepared using Shell Spramul can be stored for long periods of time without any of loss of properties.

Shell Spramul C - Shell Spramul C for surface dressings or slurry surfacing

Shell Spramul C

Specifically developed for lightly trafficked coloured pavements

Shell Spramul C is a cationic polymer modified synthetic clear emulsion for cold application, based on Shell Mexphalte C technology. It was specifically developed for lightly trafficked coloured pavements, making it ideal for heritage sites. What’s more, it is cost-effective and is designed for ease of use, especially in hard-to-reach places, to produce low on-site emissions and to offer exceptional visual appearance and texture.

Shell Spramul C enables the natural texture and colour of the aggregates to be visible. It can also be coloured using small amounts of pigments to provide a subtly coloured pavement.

When used correctly pavements made with Shell Spramul C can offer you:

  • Exceptional visual appearance and texture;
  • Ease of use;
  • Convenient cold application;
  • A solution for hard-to-reach places;
  • Low emissions; and
  • Cost-effectiveness.
