This process allows traditional paving equipment to be used with only minor investment for adaptation of the asphalt mixing plant, producing a high quality asphalt. Temperature of the Shell WAM Foam production and laying is reduced by about 50°C. To achieve that, in the production process, the conventional bitumen is replaced by the use of two separate bitumen components in the mixing stage: a special soft bitumen and a hard grade in foam form. Such combination enables the product to be successfully mixed at lower temperatures than conventional hot mixtures. Shell WAM Foam is suitable for any layer in the road, producing high quality asphalt with significantly improved workability over conventional hot-mixture asphalt. Additionally, as with traditional asphalt, Recycled Asphalt Plannings (RAP) can be incorporated into the mixture. It has a proven track record in both the low-temperature environment (Nordics) as well as in the high temperature and highly trafficked environment (Italy). Carbon Benefit By reducing production and laying temperature of about 50°C, there is a dramatic reduction of emissions, dust and fumes. - At the plant during production, reduction of CO2 (30%), CO (25%), Nox (60%) and dust (more than 50%).
- At the site while laying, fumes almost down to 0.
Due to the lower temperatures required, the Shell WAM Foam process results in lower energy consumption, between 25 and 35 %. >> Shell WAM Foam Video - Firenza-Pisa-Livorno High Speed Road >> Shell WAM Foam Video - Florence-Pise-Livourne Route a Grande Vitesse >> Shell WAM Foam Presentation [Download PDF 2160KB] >> Shell WAM Foam Brochure [Download PDF 621KB] For information on downloading PDF files, please visit our Accessibility Help page - link opens in a new window. |
