Road-grade bitumen can be heated to lower its viscosity, making it more fluid for spray sealing a pavement. An alternative to heating is the addition of a solvent. When a solvent is added the bitumen viscosity is reduced temporarily. This blend is termed "cutback bitumen". Cutback bitumen may be made with different viscosities after the predetermined addition of bitumen cutter with the purpose of reducing the bitumen viscosity to a desired level allowing more efficent spraying as well as ensuring stronger adhesion to prepared bases and aggregates.
