The Cariphalte S range of sealing binders encompasses the recommended range of modified binders for maintenance operations on the Australian highway network. Cariphalte S binders range from lightly modified to heavily modified and can be used in High Stress Seals (HSS), Strain Alleviating Membranes (SAM) and Strain Alleviating Membrane Interlayers (SAMI). Careful selection of polymer types greatly enhances binder performance, improving elasticity, reducing temperature susceptibility and improving adhesion.

Cariphalte S5E |
 |
Cariphalte S5E is a proprietary SBS modified sealing grade bitumen. The binder has been designed to be used in seals over moderately distressed pavements where environmental cracking may be observed and is intended to replicate the performance characteristics of low concentration crumb rubber bitumens. Environmental cracks are slow moving and can be induced by seasonal or diurnal changes in temperature or ground water conditions. Cariphalte S5E is a suitable bitumen for sites where the cracking severity is low and crack movement is observed to be less than 0.5mm. Advantages of Cariphalte S5E over conventional binders are as follows:
|
|
- Improved aggregate adhesion in moderately stressed areas.
- Superior rheology for seals subject to traffic induced cracks.
- Higher cohesive strength to withstand stripping action of high speed traffic.
- Higher viscosity at elevated temperatures combats bleeding of binder.

Cariphalte S10E is suitable for sites where the cracking severity is low and crack movement is observed to be less than 0.5mm. Advantages of Cariphalte S10E over conventional binders are as follows:
|
|
- Improved aggregate adhesion in highly stressed areas.
- Superior rheology for seals subject to traffic induced cracks.
- Higher cohesive strength to withstand stripping action of high speed traffic.
- Higher viscosity at elevated temperatures combats bleeding of binder.

Cariphalte S20E |
 |
A higher level of polymer modification means that Cariphalte S20E can be used on sites where both environmental and traffic associated cracking causes severe distress to the pavement. Cariphalte S20E can also be used as a Strain Alleviating Membrane Interlayer (SAMI) on bases with slow moving environmental cracks. Advantages of Cariphalte S20E over conventional binders are as follows:
|
|
- Improved aggregate adhesion in highly stressed areas.
- Superior rheology for seals subject to traffic induced cracks.
- Higher cohesive strength to withstand stripping action of high speed traffic.
- Higher viscosity at elevated temperatures combats bleeding of binder.

Cariphalte S25E |
 |
Cariphalte S25E is a highly modified bitumen and is therefore suitable for the most severe applications over both fast and slow moving cracks. It can also be used as a Strain Alleviating Membrane Interlayer (SAMI) in difficult conditions where heavy traffic and rapid moving cracks occur. Advantages of Cariphalte S25E over conventional binders are as follows:
|
|
- Improved aggregate adhesion in highly stressed areas.
- Superior rheology for seals subject to traffic induced cracks.
- Higher cohesive strength to withstand stripping action of high speed traffic.
- Higher viscosity at elevated temperatures combats bleeding of binder.

Cariphalte S35E (SAM) |
 |
Cariphalte S35E is a high performance SBS modified sealing grade bitumen. The binder has been designed to be used in seals over moderately distressed pavements where both environmental cracking and traffic induced cracking have occurred. Environmental cracks are slow moving and can be induced by seasonal or diurnal changes in temperature or ground water conditions. Cariphalte S35E is a suitable bitumen for sites where an intermediate level of cracking exists and movement is less than 0.5mm. Cariphalte S35E can also be used as a high stress seal (HSS) on steep gradients or tight curves with heavy load intensities and can also be used in conjunction with geotextiles. Advantages of Cariphalte S35E over conventional binders are as follows:
|
|
- Improved aggregate adhesion in highly stressed areas.
- Superior rheology for seals subject to traffic induced cracks.
- Higher cohesive strength to withstand stripping action of high speed traffic.
- Higher viscosity at elevated temperatures combats bleeding of binder.

The Cariphalte A range of asphalt binders offers a suite of polymer modified bitumens for heavy duty asphalt applications. The Cariphalte range is designed to maximise the resistance to permanent deformation and improve fatigue lives of asphalt mixtures which will be used in the most demanding locations. The different rheological characteristics of Cariphalte A binders also facilitate their use in open graded asphalt where thicker binder films are required on the aggregate skeleton.

Cariphalte A10E |
 |
Cariphalte A10E is a very high performance polymer modified bitumen designed for use in heavily trafficked situations such as major intersections, inclines, airports and container terminals. This extremely elastic binder will offer excellent resistance to deformation in a well designed asphalt mixture and will also exhibit first class fatigue performance. The advantages conferred by Cariphalte A10E in asphalt mixtures compared with conventional materials are as follows:
|
|
- Greater resistance to permanent deformation
- Improved fatigue performance
- Increased resistance to reflective cracking
- Provides a durable surface of high cohesive strength
- Improves adhesion between wearing and base course
- Greater ability to absorb thermal movements

Cariphalte A15E |
 |
Cariphalte A15E is a high performance binder with a medium level of polymer modification. It is designed for use in asphalt applications for heavy traffic such as major intersections, inclines with a northerly aspect, braking and acceleration zones. The enhanced elasticity of the bitumen confers greatly improved deformation resistance and fatigue performance to the asphalt mixture. The advantages conferred by Cariphalte A15E in asphalt mixtures compared with conventional materials are as follows:
|
|
- Greater resistance to permanent deformation
- Improved fatigue performance
- Increased resistance to reflective cracking
- Provides a durable surface of high cohesive strength
- Improves adhesion between wearing and base course
- Greater ability to absorb thermal movements

Cariphalte A20E |
 |
Cariphalte A20E is a binder which can be used both in dense asphalt and open grade applications. In open grade aphalts it is important to achieve a thick binder film on the aggregate particles to maximise the durability of the material and the rheology of Cariphalte A20E facilitates this. It is also an excellent binder for thin asphalt surfacings where improved performance must be integrated with handling requirements. Advantages of Cariphalte A20E over conventional binders are as follows:
|
|
- Greater resistance to secondary compaction and deformation
- Improved long term durability
- Substantially improved fatigue performance
- Provides a durable surface of high cohesive strength
- Storage stable
- Improved binder film thickness & reduced binder drainage in open graded asphalt
