MSO’s Outreach Project Facilitator, Gillian Howell will lead a team of four MSO musicians working alongside Geelong primary students to create their own piece of music, using a mix of instruments and voices in the classroom. The group will work together for the day to create a musical piece, which will then be performed for the remainder of the school at the end of the sessions. Shell Geelong Refinery has been heavily involved in the local community for many years, and has also been an ongoing and invaluable supporter of the MSO. This Shell/MSO partnership allows local schools and students to benefit from the experience of collaborating with MSO musicians to create a new work for performance. These Outreach projects were first offered to Geelong schools in 2004 as part of Shell Geelong Refinery’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The response to the 2004 project was one of tremendous enthusiasm from teachers and students. Amanda Baulch, Performing Arts Teacher at Corio Primary said “The experience you provided our children with…instilled this love and appreciation even more and I was honoured to be part of such an experience.” Shell Geelong Refinery Manager, Mr Geoff Ellison, said, “School children are our future and the MSO outreach program helps to develop cultural vitality in young musicians.” The MSO Outreach Program is a dynamic and responsive program of workshops, masterclasses, visits and creative projects, taking place in schools and other community settings. Each project is individually tailored according to the needs and interests of the participants - from all levels of experience whether musical or not.
