Shell Calls for Clean Up Australia Day Volunteers

04/03/2005

Shell Geelong Refinery is encouraging local residents and community groups to lend a hand and participate in the Refinery’s annual ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ activity to be held on Sunday 6 March 2005 at the Northern Beach, Corio Bay, between 9.00am - 12.00pm.

Refinery Environmental Field Officer, David Burrell, said Shell employees had a long and proud history of participating in Clean Up Australia Day.

“Each year many Shell employees and their families participate in Clean Up Australia Day and we would like to encourage other community members to join us this Sunday,” said Mr Burrell.

“This is not a Shell staff activity, it is for all local residents who care for the environment to lend a hand to clean rubbish that clogs our beaches, parks, roadsides, bushland and waterways.

“Interested community members should register as a volunteer at Shell’s Clean Up Australia Day post located on the Shell Parade Foreshore on Sunday morning.

Volunteers will receive a rubbish bag, gloves, sunscreen and a Shell hat. Wearing sturdy shoes is highly recommended.

“Shell will also be providing morning tea to thank everyone who volunteers at the Shell site for their hard work and we will also have some prizes to hand out,” he said.

Clean Up Australia Chairman and Founder, Ian Kiernan AO, says that as long as rubbish continues to turn up in the environment we must continue to clean it up.

“Clean Up Australia Day is a fantastic example of how individual action of many can affect great change in communities around Australia. Participating is easy, fun and anyone can help clean up,” Mr Kiernan said.
