Shell Clyde Refinery Westmead Childrens Hospital Donations Top $1 Million

02/03/2005

Today the Children’s Hospital at Westmead were recipients of two cheques totalling more than $71,000 which will help with the promotion of kids health along with a vital poisons information service thanks to Shell Clyde Refinery.

The latest cheques for $61,250 to “Kids Health” and $10,000 to the Poison Information Centre bring the total amount donated by Shell Clyde Refinery over the years to $1,000,007.

Gilly Paxton, Deputy Director of Community Relations at The Children's Hospital at Westmead said: “Shell has been a great supporter of Kids Health - a health promotion unit within the hospital that incorporates a resource centre and bookshop.

“Kids Health works with hospital departments and public organisations to develop health promotion programs that promote and protect the health and wellbeing of children and young adults,” Ms Paxton said.

“In addition to supporting Kids Health, Shell’s generosity is also helping the Poisons Information Centre – a vital service which offers advice on the treatment of poisonings and envenomations for both adults and children.

“The Children’s Hospital at Westmead feels privileged to have such great support from the Shell Refinery.  The hospital relies heavily on community support and donations for the purchase of vital equipment, services and research programs and greatly appreciates the ongoing generosity and goodwill provided by Shell.”

Shell has been donating to The Children’s Hospital since 1986 as part of a safety incentive scheme designed to prevent injuries occurring at the refinery.

"It is wonderful to know that the safety practices at Shell have helped the lives of so many sick kids in the past and hopefully in the future,” Ms Paxton said.

Shell Clyde Refinery Health Safety and Environment Manager, Andrew Harvey said: “We are delighted to have this partnership with the Hospital which has helped so many children over the years, and has also helped us to keep focused on our objective to ensure we cause no harm to anyone on or off the refinery site.”

The safety incentive scheme identifies a number of good practices designed to prevent injuries occurring and allocates a dollar value to them.  A minimum performance level is set.  When employees and contractors exceed this, money begins to accumulate.  If a lost time injury occurs the account goes back to zero and the process starts again.
