Shell Welcomes the Prime Minister’s Bio Fuels Taskforce Report

22/09/2005

Shell in Australia welcomes the release today of the Prime Minister's biofuels taskforce report.

Shell has continued to voice its support for the Government’s target of the use of 350 ML of biofuels per year by 2010.

Shell is taking active steps towards including biofuels in its product portfolio and has maintained that we see a role for biofuels in the Australian fuel mix, particularly in the medium term.

The Government's measures to help restore consumer confidence in biofuels are a positive step toward developing biofuels as a sustainable part of the Australian fuel mix and are welcomed by Shell.

Shell has continued to advocate that for biofuels to become a sustainable part of the Australian fuel mix, consumer confidence in biofuels must be restored and a reliable supply of suitable quality biofuels must be available at competitive prices.

Shell looks forward to the opportunity to meet with the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister next week to begin discussions on the proposed Industry Action Plan.

Internationally, Shell is the largest blender of transport biofuels (e.g. US, Europe and Brazil). Shell is looking to draw on this experience to address some of the challenges that exist in the Australian market. For more information on Shell’s international position go to www.shell.com/biofuels

Whilst we recognise that the Australian vehicle pool is different to that in other countries, our experience in these international markets is that biofuels have been a highly successful part of our quality fuels offer and have been extremely well received by customers.

It is essential that all biofuels policies should be based on sound science to ensure that consumers have absolute confidence in biofuels products.

Shell is committed to delivering quality fuels in Australia.
