My primary role is to manage the Electrical Distribution System at the Geelong Refinery. This incorporates other responsibility such as managing the sites Electrical safety, Training and career development of other Engineers & Tradespersons, delivering compliance with various legislative acts and of course Electrical Engineering.
What do you like best about your role?
This role is a dynamic and challenging. The variety of working tasks vary significantly from day to day and can include anything from equipment breakdown, electrical design work, project development to refinery electrical master planning. The role also encourages contact and team building with other engineering colleagues worldwide.
Tell us about your background and experience
I started my career as an apprentice Instrument Technician at Shell Refining (Aust) Pty Ltd. Upon completion of the apprenticeship; I left Shell to work for a multinational control system company. At that time, I also enrolled at Swinburne University (Melbourne) to study part-time Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation, I return back to Geelong and accepted a position as an Electrical Project Engineer, working at a Fertiliser company. The work mainly consisted of capital expansion project works, predominately in Electrical Engineering. In 2002, an opportunity arose to return to Shell Refining (Aust) Pty Ltd, working as an Electrical Support Engineer. I performed this role for two years, followed by a two-year role in the Project Group at Shell. Finally, in 2005 I accepted the role of Senior Electrical Engineer at the Geelong Refinery after retirement of my colleague and mentor
