Melissa Leonard

What is your current role at Shell?

As the Environment Team Leader I’m responsible for driving continuous environmental performance improvement at the Geelong Refinery.  This involves monitoring and challenging performance trends, advising the site on environmental issues and ensuring compliance with relevant environmental laws, permits and standards, in line with Shell’s own polices and overall business goals.

What do you like best about your role?

The constant learning and challenges that come with working on a complex industrial site is what I enjoy most.  It’s a diverse and fast paced operating environment where on any given day I may be engaging with operators and contractors, refinery management, our regulators and our community.  Environmental performance improvement is a high priority for the refinery and with my team we are able to influence performance improvements at all levels of the refinery – and actually seeing the improvements the refinery has made is the most satisfying thing for me.

Tell us about your background and experience

After an inspiring time completing a Bachelor of Engineering in Geological Engineering at RMIT University in 1998, I started my career in engineering consulting before joining Shell in 2001.  My first role at Shell was as an Environmental Project Manager, which allowed me to build on all the experience gained from completing environmental site assessments and project management in consulting to then understanding and managing environmental performance across a range of Shell businesses at locations around Australia. I have also completed a Masters in Environmental Law to compliment my engineering skills.

What makes you stay at Shell?

Being part of a large global energy company adds just another dimension to the day-to-day challenges on site. For example, in my current role I am enjoying working with global counterparts on other refinery sites in a global environmental network.   In my time at Shell I have been able to develop a range of skills across Health, Safety and Environment and in my role as team leader I am enjoying developing people and building my own expertise. The people I work with are a great attraction, along with all that a global energy company offers in terms of careers.
