Why did you join Shell?

I  wanted to join a company that offered me the chance to travel and work on global projects that draw on all areas of my education.

I also wanted to join Shell in order to benefit from their three year graduate program which provides graduates with the support and opportunity to develop their core skills and also work in challenging areas outside of ones own comfort zone.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

I’m currently working in SITI (Shell Information Technology International) which is an area of the organization that is primarily focused on delivering IT-based projects to the business.

Due to the relatively short life cycle of most projects, I find my role to be ever changing and challenging. In order to become a valuable contributor to the project team, you have to be able to adapt to change quickly, be a team player and always be prepared to learn and travel.

I’m currently a project manager in the Site Systems team. This involves being responsible for the rollout of site systems technology (including point of sale and back office systems as well as pumps and site cabling) to countries in the Asia Pacific region. Since joining the team I have been involved in rolling out systems to Pakistan, Thailand and Australia. The highlight of which was being involved in the rollout of new site systems for the recent Shell/Coles Myer alliance.

What do you like most about the job?

I thoroughly enjoy the fact that my job is never the same from one year (sometimes even from six months) to the next. This ensures that my learning curve always remains steep, thus satisfying my need for new and exciting challenges.

I also enjoy the high level of independence and trust that I receive from my supervisors. This allows me to grow and learn by getting personally involved in all areas of my work as opposed to being hand held or involved at superficial levels.

Travel is also another factor that drew me to Shell and certainly an aspect that I get to enjoy as part of my current role. Travel to countries such as Thailand and Malaysia on a monthly basis certainly satisfies my travel bug and provides me with the opportunity to learn about other cultures and make friends in various areas of the world.
