Why did you join Shell? |
All my interactions with Shell employees exhibited the company’s core values of honesty, integrity and respect for people. I felt motivated to be part of such a team. I feel that the recruiting process of a company reflects on the core values and business dealings of that company. I was reassured and impressed by the thorough and unique recruitment method coupled with totally honesty and transparency as to what Shell was looking for in a future Shell employee. This gave me faith in knowing that Shell recruiters were searching for high quality people with a diverse skills set rather than the top university scores. My ideal work environment is one that offers opportunities to acquire real-time, real-life skills and experience in a practical (highly applied, hands-on) manner. The role I was offered has the capacity to provide this, and much more.

How would you describe your role at Shell? |
My role as a Project Manager offers a balance between on site and office work. I am required to manage resources to produce cost effective, timely, safe and professional delivery of projects to clients. As a project manager emphasis is placed on myself taking complete ownership of the total project delivery process -taking the client need through project development, approval, implementation and close out. As a graduate this responsibility provides a unique sense of ownership and the satisfaction of seeing a project develop through to implementation. This ownership is both challenging and scary, as I am constantly being pushed out of my comfort zone and to higher levels of excellence.

What do you like most about the job? |
I take pride in the sense that I am part of a team of highly motivated professionals. I have been placed with highly knowledgeable senior engineers that understand the limitations and capacities of a graduate, and on a larger scale I know that advice, knowledge and professional support are merely a question away. In addition, from as early as the recruitment process I have been told that I am responsible for the direction of my career. In essence I enjoy the sense that my career with Shell is not pre destined by upper management, but rather my ambition and motivation. The knowledge that that Shell is committed to invest the resources needed, coupled with active encouragement to focus on personal and professional development leads me to not only believe but understand that the possibilities with Shell are limited only by my imagination and desire to work towards what I choose to achieve.
