Why did you join Shell?

I met inspirational people throughout the recruitment process. Of the 10 or so companies that I was assessed by, the Shell process was by far the most challenging and thorough. After completing the Shell Recruitment Day I was confident that Shell knew what I was capable of as opposed to some other firms who simply asked me some basic questions. I deduced that both the professional nature of the Shell assessment process and the challenging nature of the tasks would reflect the nature of the work and responsibility I would be given if I was to join. Working for an International company was also very appealing.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

I have been working in the Melbourne Attraction & Recruitment team together with colleagues based in Singapore, China and KL. We attract and recruit employees throughout the Asia Pacific region. We are part of the global Attraction & Recruitment team and regularly communicate to colleagues in The Hague, London and Houston.

The major element of my role has been Graduate recruitment. In this capacity I am responsible for the “graduate attraction campaign” which is everything Shell does in the external market to attract top University graduates. I formulate the local strategy and liase with academics, careers centres and student groups. I am active on campus during the annual recruitment drive and I also participate in assessing candidates.

In addition I am involved in experienced recruitment, MBA recruitment, vacation work recruitment, research projects for local and global customers and numerous projects in cooperation with our global team. There are always many things on the go so my role is varied and interesting.

What do you like most about the job?

I have been given a high level of autonomy and responsibility and am trusted to “get the job done” professionally. Local and global colleagues value my opinions and I participate in numerous forums to discuss our future strategic direction.

Furthermore, the nature of recruitment means that I have been exposed to various Shell businesses that have provided me with a valuable insight into the operations of this enormous company.

I have also been very active in the various environmental projects that Shell supports in Australia – I have spent a week on a conservation project in Tasmania, a weekend with fellow graduates researching a penguin colony, and later this year I will be participating in a 2 week study about an isolated island koala population. I am supported in my endeavors to give back to the local community, which is not typical of most employers.
