Why did you join Shell?

When I initially joined Shell, I’d already had 12 months experience. I was offered the opportunity to work in the Projects Group. I knew that was exactly what I was looking for, the opportunity to enhance my technical skills whilst acquiring additional people management and operational exposure.

The support and training that Shell provides excited me and the challenge to take ownership of your work with the benefit of a support network is a definite plus.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

I’m now into my second role here at the Newport Terminal. I started out as a Project Engineer, with the responsibility to providing Engineering Support and Project Design/Implementation for Southern Region. In this role I was always providing a service to an internal client, by either maintaining an existing facility or installing a new one.

My new role is also at Newport where I am now the client to the Project Group as the Newport Terminal Maintenance and Operations Supervisor, in this role I have to manage the day to day maintenance of the terminal, provide a strong focus on Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE) and be the client to the engineering group. Within two years at Shell, I’ve been able to see two completely different sides of the business and gain an appreciation of what they both require to run efficiently.

What do you like most about the job?

The exciting part of project work is having complete ownership and responsibility for a project from design through to construction where it becomes a reality. Whilst they started out small, the projects grew to $1.6Mil in size and were always different and challenging. It is always challenging trying to run with numerous projects simultaneously in remote locations.

My new role presents different challenges with a greater focus on operational excellence and people management. It’s exciting to know that your job is focusing on maintaining the continued operation of the terminal, which changes on a daily basis. It’s great to be able to apply engineering skills in a really practical sense.
