Community views sought on Shell Geelong Refinery's environment plan

10/08/2007

Community views are being sought with the release of Shell Geelong Refinery's draft Environment Improvement Plan (EIP) 2007-2009.

An EIP is a voluntary, public commitment by a company to improve its environmental performance. It is a commitment between a company, the community and the environmental regulator and aspires to continuous improvement on emerging environmental concerns.

Shell Geelong Refinery General Manager, Huck Poh, said that he would like to acknowledge and thank the refinery's Community Advisory Panel members for their advice and commitment during the past 18 months.

"The refinery has made great progress and I am really proud of what we achieved through the EIP 2004-2006.  We are determined to continue to improve the refinery's environmental performance and I encourage the local community to provide feedback on our plan," Mr Poh said.

"We've invested significant funds to achieve many environmental improvements, including particulate emission reductions, better water management, cleaner fuels and expanded ambient air monitoring.

"The purpose of the EIP 2007 - 2009 is to build on the refinery's recent major achievements - many of which were completed as a result of actions identified under the EIP 2004-2006 - and to identify new opportunities for environmental improvement.

"While we celebrate our achievements we are determined to do better, and part of that is to seek feedback from the community," Mr Poh said.

"Shell has worked hard to broaden its engagement and share information with the whole Geelong community through its reconstituted and broadened CAP, and the re-working and enhancement of its social and environmental engagement program. The wide promotion of the draft EIP 2007-2009 for comment seeks to further that goal by giving anyone and everyone in the community an opportunity to make their views known before the plan is finalised," Mr Poh said.

The draft EIP 2007-2009 will be open for community comment for four weeks until Friday 7 September.  Copies of the refinery's EIP are available on the website www.shell.com.au/geelong or by phoning the refinery's neighbourhood hotline on 1800 651 818.
