In launching the review, General Manager, Huck Poh, said the central theme was about how the refinery is delivering on its promises, and in particular how employees are the driving force behind the achievements. "In 2006, we achieved some great things, and while we celebrate them, we are determined to do better," said Huck. "We've invested in the refinery to achieve particulate emission reductions, better water management and cleaner fuels," said Huck. "We have also recently clocked four million work-hours without a lost time injury. This is a first in the history of the refinery, and is a fantastic achievement. Our next aim is to achieve five million work-hours without a lost time injury. "The success of any business depends upon the quality of the people within it and we are fortunate to have a talented and dedicated group of people at this refinery. "People, such as Siong Yan Kua, featured on the cover of the Annual Review, who has helped the refinery to reduce its water use and Debbie Schroer, the refinery's first female apprentice, who in 2006 won a prestigious international Shell award for her leadership in electrical safety management," said Huck. "There is no doubt that being part of a global organisation has helped build our skills base and over the years this has built a base of skills in Geelong, which supports us and others in the manufacturing sector. "The challenge we now face is attracting more young people, particularly females, into manufacturing. Shell is actively encouraging young women to consider a career in manufacturing. This year we launched 'Non traditional pathways for girls' a program that aims to inform female secondary school students about a career in this industry. "The refinery also sees apprenticeships as an important part of addressing the skills shortage in Geelong. The refinery has played a major role in the establishment of the Australian Technical College Geelong and is training around 12 apprentices each year through G-Force Recruitment. "We are very much part of the Geelong community, and we aim to help build our community. Shell's commitment to Geelong is demonstrated by our continued investment in the refinery and our achievements," Huck said.
