Shell Cats Heroes Series, a unique program created in partnership by Shell Geelong Refinery and the Geelong Football Club, is about imparting that knowledge and a whole lot more. The series, designed to give children of the northern suburbs of Geelong a unique experience at the Geelong Football Club, started in 2005 and is back again and this year, bigger and better than ever! Children will meet their favourite players and be shown through the inner sanctum of the club. Key messages such as the importance of nutrition and exercise will be reinforced in a fun and interactive environment. There will also be a few surprises for the participants! Shell Cats Heroes Series participants will race against the clock in the 20m-sprint test to beat Kane Tenace and the child with the best time will win a model car donated by Shell. Children will also participate in a vertical jump and view the amazing quantity of healthy food consumed by Cameron Ling before a match. Children will be photographed taking a ‘spekky’ over a player, be shown through the inner sanctum of the club and finish by running through a banner onto the ground to the Cats’ theme song. There are nine players involved in the program including: Brad Ottens, Henry Playfair, Brent Prismall, Gary Ablett, Matt McCarthy, Will Slade, David Johnson, David Wojcinski and Nathan Ablett. Three groups of 60 students will participate in this program over an entire day. Each program runs for one and a half hours. Shell Geelong Refinery Manager, Huck Poh, says the refinery is delighted to once again be supporting the series. “The series is an important part of our social investment program as it benefits the children who live near the refinery and reinforces the positive messages of motivation and commitment,” said Huck. “The day is something most of us would never experience and we hope the long-term benefit for the children involved will be the realisation that goals can be achieved if you have focus, work hard and lead a healthy lifestyle. “Football players are positive role models for children and we’re glad that Shell’s association with the Geelong Football Club can connect these children with some of their heroes,” said Huck. Schools involved: Bell Park North PS, Corio PS, Corio South PS, Corio West PS, Lara PS, Lara Lake PS, Nelson Park PS, Norlane West PS, North Shore PS, Rollins PS, Rosewall PS, St Anthony’s, St Francis Xavier PS, St Thomas Aquinas PS and Holy Family PS.
