SHELL GEELONG REFINERY LAUNCHES 2005 ANNUAL REVIEW

19/07/2006

Shell Geelong Refinery launched today its 2005 Annual Performance Review - ‘Our Future, Together’.  2005 was a milestone year for the refinery, which achieved its best ever safety performance and significant environmental improvements.

In launching the review, General Manager, Huck Poh, said he was proud of what employees had achieved.

“While there were many highlights for 2005, the standout achievement was that for the first time in our history all staff and contractors worked an entire year, around the clock, without incurring a recordable injury.  This performance is world-class and reflects the sustained focus we have on safety and outstanding commitment from employees,” said Huck.

“We maintained greater plant reliability that enabled us to continue meeting our customer commitments to supply, amongst others, half of Victoria’s and almost all of Tasmania’s fuel,” he said.

“The refinery’s environmental performance continued to improve and a 6o per cent reduction in licence breaches, relative to the previous year, was achieved.  This reflects the significant investment being made in this area, including $35 million already spent and a further $52 million committed to environmental improvements during the next two years.

“Progress on our Environment Improvement Plan (EIP) continued and we have completed 94 out of the 155 items.

“Another significant achievement was the implementation of a new, more inclusive and representative community engagement process, including the formation of an expertise-based community advisory panel (CAP).

“Hundreds of thousands of dollars was also invested in a range of social investment activities reflecting three key areas - care for the environment, health and education.

“Shell Geelong Refinery is a complex refinery and our challenges are many. We believe the key to the future is an ability to operate in a way that has minimal impact on the environment while working with, and maximising value for, all our stakeholders.

“The 2005 annual review describes how we are striving to live up to our operational, social and environmental responsibilities. We are determined to do even better and with a dedicated team in place, I am confident that the refinery can achieve its goals as we work towards our future, together,” he said.
