Shell Geelong Refinery Environmental Officer and National Tree Day local organiser, David Burrell, said the refinery has planted around 40,000 trees and shrubs and hopes to plant another 60,000 in the next 10 years. “Planting drought-resistant native trees in the refinery buffer zone not only beautifies the area, but it also helps the environment through the absorption of greenhouse gases,” said David. “National Tree Day is a great way for the refinery and the community to work together to make a difference to our local area and we’d like to invite anyone interested in participating on Sunday to come along. “In addition to morning tea, volunteers will be supplied with gloves, a hat and sunscreen as it is planned to have a great morning in the fresh air and sunshine. “The refinery recently contracted our standard tree planting program to Karingal and we have been delighted with the highly professional way the crew has performed. The local Scouts have also been generous with their time and, since 2003, have participated in 18 tree planting sessions with the ultimate aim of achieving their landcare badge and promoting good environmental practices amongst their ranks.” National Tree Day is organised by Planet Ark and held each year on 31 July. Individuals interested in volunteering at the refinery can just turn up on the day, with planting occurring between 9am and 12pm. Participants should enter via Refinery Road and follow the signs to the designated meeting place. END
