Environment Improvement Plan (EIP)

An Environment Improvement Plan (EIP) is a voluntary, public commitment by a company to improve its environmental performance.

Land and Groundwater

Environmental improvement is a priority for Shell Geelong Refinery.

Clean Air

We are investing $130 million in major environmental projects as part of an eight year plan concluding in 2011.

Reducing Water Use

The Refinery has achieved water savings of over 136 million litres per year in 2006 and 2007 through various small projects. The refinery, through the Barwon Water Northern Water Plant, is targeting a further reduction of domestic water use by almost 2,000 ML a year.

Community Amenity

The refinery is governed by an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria licence which includes monitoring thousands of measurement points each year.

Waste Management

In future it is envisaged almost all of the dried sludge will be taken to the refinery’s composting site, Schoe Park, for bio-remediation.

Water Master Plan Project

The Water Master Plan Project completed in 2007 has "No discharge of contaminants to Corio Bay from Geelong Refinery".
