Shell Geelong Refinery was commissioned in 1954 and is one of the largest and most complex hydrocarbon refineries in Australia. About 500 people are employed on site, as well as hundreds of contractors. Twelve apprentices are employed at the refinery each year. The refinery's total impact on the Geelong region, including direct and indirect effects, has been independently assessed at $1.1 billion of output in terms of products, local spending and wages.
