Sakhalin II
Sakhalin II is one of the world’s largest integrated, export-oriented oil and gas projects and Russia’s first offshore gas project. When running at full capacity, expected in 2010, Sakhalin II will add 5% to the world’s current liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity. It will meet almost 8% of Japan’s gas needs and 5% of South Korea’s. Discover the project and the people involved.

Sakhalin at a glance
Sakhalin II is one of the world’s largest integrated, export-oriented oil and gas projects and Russia’s first offshore gas project.
Platforms withstand ice, earthquakes
Three huge oil and gas platforms a few kilometres off Sakhalin Island can withstand 10-metre high waves, typhoons and the enormous pressure of ice floes.
Securing LNG supplies
Russia shipped its first liquefied natural gas from the Sakhalin II plant in March 2009.
Pipelines cross harsh terrain
Two 800-kilometre onshore pipelines run the length of Sakhalin Island, over mountains, under rivers, through swamps and forests.
Creating jobs, hospitals and roads
The Sakhalin II project brought new jobs to the remote Russian island, and invested in new hospitals and better roads.
