Qatargas 4 started production in early 2011.
Despite being built in a challenging construction environment, progress at the project has been very much in line with our expectations at the time of the investment decision.
The majority of the onshore and offshore facilities for Qatargas 4 have been developed jointly with Qatargas 3 (a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum, ConocoPhillips and Mitsui development) through a single joint asset development team.
The LNG will be transported to market via a fleet of eight ships, each with a capacity in the range of 210,000-266,000m³, operated by Nakilat with the support of STASCO. First cargo was shipped to India – a new market – in February 2011.
Qatargas 4 opened up new markets for Qatari LNG in China and Dubai with agreements signed in 2008. China has huge potential as a new long-term market for Qatari LNG. In Dubai LNG can be used to help meet the country’s power demands for construction and water desalination plants, as well as for air-conditioning in summer when temperatures can hit 50° Celsius. Qatargas 4 continues to look for further opportunities to deliver LNG to other new markets that require stable and reliable energy supply.
Together with Pearl GTL, Qatargas 4 represents a multi-billion dollar commitment to Qatar by Shell. The project is being developed in line with our sustainable development principles.
