What is your current role at Shell?

I am Head of Tax for the Shell Companies in Australia. I am responsible for the overall Shell Australia relationship with stakeholders such as Federal and State Revenue Authorities. I manage a team of tax specialists who provide advice and assistance across a broad spectrum of State & Federal taxes, including income tax, capital gains tax, stamp duty, land tax, withholding tax, excise, GST, PRRT and Fringe Benefits Tax.

My role involves managing the timely and accurate remittance of this broad range of taxes to the relevant authorities on behalf of the Shell businesses in Australia. I’m also responsible for the pro-active and timely provision of advice by the tax team across all Shell’s businesses in Australia including Exploration and Production, Gas and Power, Oil Products and Chemicals. I interact closely on a daily basis with colleagues across business and functional lines both inside Australia and across the world.

What do you like best about your role?

My job is dynamic and never repetitive. I enjoy being empowered to develop and implement creative solutions to complex problems. I enjoy interacting with my colleagues and leveraging my own development through their diversity and intellect. Most of all I enjoy the diversity of my job – the opportunity and occasion to focus on all dimensions of my personal development, from the various leadership attributes to technical excellence.

Tell us about your background and experience

I joined Shell from a global consulting firm. I wanted to work in a global company with global brand recognition and I was keen to accelerate my personal development outside the consulting paradigm. I was looking for a role where I could utilise my technical tax skills in a diverse environment and take an active ‘ownership’ role in applying these skills to shape business direction.

What makes you stay at Shell?

I enjoy its strong reputation in the marketplace, the quality of its people and its investment in them. Shell offers unrivalled personal development opportunities across diverse and complex energy businesses, with the opportunity to develop either within or outside the tax field of expertise. Shell’s global reach provides unlimited opportunities to apply my skills both domestically and across country borders.

The Shell brand is well recognised and truly global - even our 4-year-old can readily identify the ‘pecten’ (Shell's Logo) and the company I work for!
