What is your current role at Shell?

I am responsible for the communication of our business unit’s message to external and internal customers. Additionally, I work with our various teams on leveraging e-business tools to provide our customers with easier access to information and simple order processing and tracking, while at the same time streamlining our internal procedures to maximise efficiency and save costs. My role has a lot to do with managing the transition from the conventional way of doing business to the way business will be conduced in the future.

What do you like best about your role?

I enjoy the global exposure – I have to know what is going on around the world and the various factors that impact our business. I also like working in a location where business decisions are made and actions are taken. I get to be creative in finding solutions to business problems using new processes, sharing information and developing best practices.

Tell us about your background and experience

I graduated as a Chemical Engineer from McGill University and joined Shell in Jordan as a Petrochemical Assistant supporting distribution activity in Yemen and the Levant countries. Then I was selected for a technical services and market development role with Shell Chemicals, that moved me to our research and technology center in Belgium.

From there, I went back to Jordan and then to Dubai to concentrate on customer needs, delivering new products and improving our service offering in developing countries. This role was truly instrumental in my personal and professional development. I became very involved in two different regions with distinct needs and was exposed to various business complexities. In May 2003, I moved to London to start my current assignment.

What makes you stay at Shell?

Shell’s business ethic. We’re a company that really works hard to balance its commitment to people, planet and profits. In practice, this means developing new talent, fostering diversity and embracing change. The transparency and openness with which we do this means that we can really afford to put our money where our mouth is.

I also value the interaction with team members from around the globe, and being exposed to the world and the variety of heritages, mindsets and ideas that I can learn from. Through this interaction with colleagues, not only in other countries, but also in other Shell businesses, I have learned many different best practices, which are valuable in both my personal and professional life.

Shell also offers you the opportunity to move within the organisation and explore different functions even if you don’t have direct experience. It means you can develop your knowledge and skill set to reach your potential and fulfill your career ambitions.
