Crude Oil Coordinator

What is your current role at Shell?

My current position of Crude Oil Coordinator basically entails implementing crude purchase recommendations, and working these into a feasible and minimised cost purchase and delivery plan of crudes/feedstocks to our three refineries in Oceania.

In shaping the program, I need to consider logistical economics, terminal/processing constraints, demurrage impact of decisions, and crude and product market trends – which, as you can imagine, is quite a test.

In this role, I am also a critical focal point for the information flow between our business and Trading, Chartering, Finance, Refinery Operations, Coastal Scheduling, 3rd party companies. I act as the first point of contact in terms of representing our interests and key drivers relating to crude ops.

What do you like best about your role?

I’ve been at this role for two years now, and it continues to be an exciting and demanding role where I gain valuable knowledge about the international oil and freight markets, refinery operations and crude trading. I get a lot of satisfaction from utilising my strengths in communication, commercial analysis and flexible problem solving to deliver tangible financial results for Shell.

This role is a great position for learning about and contributing to a number of areas of the business. I most enjoy the wide variety, optimising, and fast pace of this role … but I hate the filing (as you will see if you wander past my desk.)

Tell us about your background and experience

I initially worked as a Logistics Analyst at a coastal shipping/scheduling company, owned by the four oil majors in New Zealand. The position was an excellent introduction to the Oil Industry and tanker scheduling.

I had my eye on Shell as a preferred next move, as I liked the structure and leadership of the NZ team, and also because I had seen many Shell staff move within Shell into a variety of career directions, both locally and overseas.

In 1999 Shell New Zealand invited me to join as their Coastal Shipping Coordinator.

What makes you stay at Shell?

Although mature, the oil industry is very competitive. In a bid to succeed, Shell have used innovative means of achieving advantage over other competitors. It is a dynamic and sometimes difficult industry to work in – but I enjoy the challenge.

After having experience in a tiny, specialised company of just eight people, I really like the feeling that in this large multinational organisation, there are numerous career options available, as well as the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people in all kinds of environments.
