“The opportunity to work as environmental engineer has been a dream job. I have been a ‘greenie’ for years, but my philosophy is that you can only achieve so much standing on the outside; it’s much better – perhaps much harder, but certainly much more rewarding – to find the solution yourself.”

What is your current role at Shell?

Currently my focus is on improving energy efficiency at Geelong Refinery. My role also involves monitoring and challenging Refinery performance and providing technical support for operations – these roles are great for building technical, project, and people skills. My previous role was Refinery environmental engineer – for me this was a dream job. If you had told me in high school that I would be working at one of the largest industrial sites in Australia, able to identify environmental issues and then just run with them, I wouldn’t have believed you. For me, the opportunity to work as environmental engineer at Geelong has been a dream job. I have been a ‘greenie’ for years, but my philosophy is that you can only achieve so much standing on the outside; it’s much better – perhaps much harder, but certainly much more rewarding – to find the solution yourself.

What do you like best about your role?

I have learned so much while working at Geelong Refinery, and shared so many happy experiences with people. I have loved the challenges, starting with the learning curve experienced as a new graduate (and forever!), managing the workloads (never a dull moment, and always opportunities to be unveiled and achieved), the trust placed in and responsibilities given to me, and the opportunities for travel. I’ve learnt how great it can be to work with a team of people who are enthusiastic and genuine. But the thing I have liked most has been the feeling you get at the end of a day, after you have achieved some improvement for our environment or people – it is such a satisfying feeling knowing that you are working towards making things better, even if only in a small way.

What makes you stay at Shell?

I have a passion for the environment and for renewable energies, and wish to contribute to these areas in my working life. My vacation work with Shell in 1994 gave me an insight to the challenges faced by the company at that time, the commitment to it’s environmental and social values, and it’s journey to strive for success in the energy market and society of the future. I believe that Shell is a century-old company that will still be here in another one hundred years, and to do this it will transition to a primarily renewable energy company.
