What is your current role at Shell?

I work for the CEO and Chief Operating Officer.

My role involves some very tight scheduling, often each manager in unison with the other, and other members of the leadership team. As the CEO is in Melbourne, and the Chief Operating Officer is in Perth, timing can be crucial – so prioritisation is key.

Screening and diverting of calls and queries tactfully and efficiently is one of my greatest accomplishments, as is ‘getting things done’.

You need an eagle eye, so that documents are correctly prepared and the controls are in place. Our managers sign on the line for large sums of money, and the documents have to be right.

What do you like best about your role?

I’m a bit of a greenie, so whilst I really enjoy working for a commercially sound company, I particularly admire the fact that Shell contributes increasingly to environmental programmes in Australia. My Earthwatch fellowship on Kangaroo Island in 2001 was a highlight, working in a pristine environment with endangered species on Kangaroo Island, namely echidnas and goannas. I hope to contribute in the area of salinity one day, as I feel this is one of Western Australia’s greatest environmental problems. It will take hundreds of years to regenerate that degraded land, and who knows what species of fauna and flora we have lost without knowing it.

Tell us about your background and experience

I have been with Shell for eighteen years. Prior to that I worked for an intelligence organisation in Africa, and traveled through Europe, basing myself and working in London.

What makes you stay at Shell?

I see the oil industry as being multi-faceted, embracing exploration, production, gas and power. I enjoy working for one of the most professional, technologically advanced global oil companies, and one with a successful triple bottom line.

Shell is becoming increasingly green and I’m proud of it. If I was a graduate joining now, I’d be impressed with the work Shell is doing in the environment.
